Grade 1/2 News

Term 1, Week 8

Reminders:

  • Ride to School Day - Tomorrow is ride to school day. We hope to see lots of students riding, scooting or walking to school. For those who live a distance from school it is ok to ride, scoot or walk part of the way.
  • Cross Country Permission - On Monday 3rd April, students will run in our annual Cross Country event. As this takes place outside of the school yard - we require families to give permission on Compass for this event. Please see the Specialist News page for more information regarding times, distances etc. Thank you to those families who have already provided permission!
  • Easter Hat Parade - on the last day of term we celebrate Easter with our annual Easter Hat Parade. We love to see the creativity of our students and their families and we can't wait to see some fabulous creations this year!
  • Easter Raffle - Your child will have recently brought home a book of raffle tickets for the Easter raffle. If your family is able to make a donation for the raffle these can be delivered to the School Office.
  • End of term early dismissal - please note on the last day of term (Thursday 6th April) students will be dismissed at the earlier time of 2.15 pm
  • Drink Bottles - Please ensure where possible that your child has a named drink bottle with them at school each day. We are finding some students are spending lots of time at the bubble taps and don't want this to continue to interrupt their learning.

What we have been up to...

Recently we have been investigating 2D shapes and their properties. We have found there are lots of shapes in our school environment and we are sure there will lots of shapes in our homes as well, some families might like to look for these! We also created 2D shape monsters in class.

Students have been busy writing stories and focusing on using the correct punctuation in their writing. We have begun practising being a 'Breakdown Buddy' where we used Triple A feedback to discuss our writing with a partner identifying what we have done well, something we could do next time to make our writing even better and how we might achieve that. This has led into discussions about writing goals in our classrooms and this could also be a great conversation to have at home, to continue students thinking about what they are working on and how they can achieve their goal.

This week Will raced Mr Trezise after achieving enough GuGu stickers. There was lots of build up to the race and it was a tight finish!

Learning in Weeks 9 & 10

Mathematics:  During week 9 students will continue to focus on the concepts of money and 3-Dimensional objects. We will look at counting small collections of coins, ordering notes and coins according to their value and comparing an amount of money with the cost of different items. Week 10 will be an opportunity for students to revise the concepts learned this term.

English: In Reading sessions students will be practising 'retell; including a sequence of events'. This will require students to develop their comprehension skills through listening to a story and then using their own words to retell the story including the events in sequence. We will revise some of the sounds already learned this term and also the words we have been practising each week for example some, went, made and look.

During Writing we will continue our focus on narratives and recounts. Students have been focusing on their writing at a sentence level, investigating the use of nouns and adjectives, and the way we can structure these in a sentence.

Topic: The last two weeks of the term will see the conclusion of our topic 'Growing Older and Wiser'. Students will be focusing on what conflict is, successful ways to resolve conflict and understanding each others emotions during a period of conflict. They will also reflect on what they have learned this term and make connections between what they knew at the beginning of the unit compared with what they know now.
