Respectful Relationships

This term in Respectful Relationships, 1/2 Murphy have been learning all about Stress Management. We received a letter from ‘Wibbly’, who told us that he was feeling very stressed and needed our help. As a class, we brainstormed what ‘stressed’ meant and came up with some strategies that Wibbly could use to calm himself down when he feels this way.

We also practiced relaxing, using the ‘Melting Moments’ strategy which is where we lied down, closed our eyes and listened to these instructions:

‘Close your eyes. Scrunch up all your muscles so you are as hard as a block of ice. Hold tight. Now slowly let go. Scrunch up again. Now let go. This time imagine your block of ice is melting into the floor. Your muscles are getting softer as you melt. Let your fingers melt. Let your feet melt. Let your back melt. Now wiggle your fingers to wake them up. Wiggle your toes to wake them up. Open your eyes. Sit up slowly.

Harmony Day - Friday 24th March

On Friday 24th of March we will be celebrating Harmony Day at SGPS.

Harmony Day is a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Students will participate in a variety of activities in house groups and complete a “passport” to reflect the different cultures explored. We're also looking forward to a performance on didgeridoo by Uncle Paul Chapman and a performance of "Everyone Belongs" by the SGPS Choir.

A huge thank you to those students who have volunteered to speak at the 9am assembly and to those students who have shared their ideas of activities reflecting their culture.

As orange is the colour to represent Harmony Day, students are encouraged to wear something orange to school. Students may also choose to wear their traditional/cultural costume to school if they have one.

SWPBS - Whole School Reward Day - Thursday 6th of April

On our last day of Term 1, students will receive their whole school reward. All of our students have been working really hard to contribute to our whole school reward by continuing to display our School Values and follow our expectations.

How do students contribute to our Whole School Reward:

Once a class reaches a certain amount of stickers collaboratively (e.g. 100 for a grade 5/6 classroom) then that class can peel a strip to reveal more of our GuGu mascot. This is displayed in the hub above the friendship seat (see picture below).

We have 4 levels of achievement and currently our students are just about to reach Level 2. This means that on our last day of Term 1 (and if no further levels are reached) then all students will receive an icy-pole (level 1) and also have a chipnic (Level 2) for lunch.

Please keep an eye on any further information that will be communicated via Compass, about this special day.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Spring Gully Primary School is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
