Grade 5/6 News

Term 1, Week 8

Great job Grade 5s!

The NAPLAN assessments all went very smoothly last week and all our Grade 5s did a marvelous job. We are incredibly proud of the resilience they have shown after a week of testing and the persistence demonstrated throughout each assessment task. Great work Grade 5s! You're awesome!

Transition - Year 7 2024

Dear Families of Grade 6 Students.

Transition commences in Term 2 2023 for our Grade 6 students moving from primary to secondary school. Early next term, we will send home all documentation for transition placement.

Information for parents can be found by following this link https://www.vic.gov.au/moving-primary-secondary-school-information-parents-and-carers. This could be a good starting point for the families that are going through this process for the first time and also for parents who have been through it before, but some time ago.

Some schools, in particular non-government schools, have already begun advertising their Information Evenings and Open Days. Each school’s website is the best place to go to find out information about these experiences and when they are occurring.

Please remember to check Compass alerts and keep up to date with our school’s newsletter as information will be sent out throughout the year. It’s important to complete the different parts of the process within the set time frames and helps to make my role easier, so I am not having to chase up late items.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me either by email or through the school office.

Regards,

Learning in Weeks 9 & 10

Reading

We are focusing on some of our 'read aloud' skills when reading, such as our ability to change pace and tone to suit the action or mood of a given text. Student understanding of punctuation and how it is used to guide our reading experience will help develop this skill.

Writing

This week all students began a creative writing challenge: to write and publish a new "Pig the Pug" picture book. This is a more complex task than students first realised, now they are aware of the need for a moral or lesson, good rhyming skill, simple language for our target audience (our Prep buddies) and of course a story line that will bring a smile to a reader's face. We will continue to work towards completing these picture books over the coming week.

Maths

We are finishing this term looking at 2 and 3 dimensional measurement. Students will be provided with a variety of opportunities to explore measurement and the different mathematical tools available to them when measuring. Next week, students will design a vegetable garden, looking at all the elements needed and how each will need to be measured to accurately complete the task.
