MC1

MC1 has been investigating Australian Animals this term and has enjoyed making beautiful works of art using recycled materials.

MC3

This term, our class has been doing local 'living history' - exploring day-to-day life in the different eras - largely on foot. We found tiny colonial cottages, restored Federation homes and grand Victorian buildings. Special thanks go to "The Furry Cow" owners, who talked us through the past lives of the old bank, book and gun shop. Bruce let us hold his medals for shooting from three Commonwealth Games. Janelle's customer service skills were great to witness and her feedback about our manners was appreciated.

We also really appreciate the time - and obvious expertise - of volunteer Mrs Muldoon, who gave us a private tour of some exhibitions in History House. Being inside "Cherry Hill Cottage" and the old laundry equipment area reinforced what we've been observing in ABC's "Further Back in Time for Dinner" series...people used to do a lot more physical labour! And whilst today may have its problems, students are glad that we no longer need a 'gazunder' in our bedrooms and teachers no longer use the cane!

Thanks to our SLSO's discovery of an old photo and the staff at the Tourist Information Centre. We found the location of the former Soldiers' Tea and Recreation Room. It was a popular hang-out during WWI, with games like cards, pool and chess. The staff of the Community Centre kindly showed us inside and let us look for evidence of the time.

Next term, we're meeting a descendant of the founder of Kwong Sings...cousin of Jeff, the original purple Wiggle.

History is all around us and in the people we meet. We just have to look around and ask people questions. As American novelist, Pearl S. Buck, said, "If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday".
