Harmony Day

Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. The Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Since 1999, more than 70,000 Harmony Day events have been held in childcare centers, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.

On the 21 of March, Glen Innes High School’s wonderful dancers went to the local celebrations at the Glen Innes Services Club and performed multiple dances. There were many other performers including Filo Momshies, Chirag and Prisca Beniwal, Jasvir Benival, COOL Choir, Jacaranda Highland, Deepwater Public School, Kayla Crossby, Glen Innes Public School, Danthonia School, Manisha and Sonam, Matt Scullion, Anthony Williams, Brendan Mackenzie, Paul Hanson, Philip Winzer and Kylie Falconer. These performances were all amazing and culturally diverse and made the day a pleasure to attend.

Glen Innes High School celebrated over the course of a week with multiple fun, inclusive activities including recess and lunch art, a scavenger hunt for Fun Facts, prizes for the first 3 correct entries drawn on Friday 24 March, learning to play Petanque (a French boules game), colouring 3D hearts, writing what Harmony Week means to you, and origami cranes. And finally, on Friday 24 March, Glen Innes High School had a mufti day to wear something orange with prizes for best dressed (First $30, 2nd $20, 3rd $10) and for lunchtime in the quad, we had a Sausage Sizzle, music played by our music students, dancing from our wonderful dancers, a photo booth created by Kate Squires and her art class, as well as 420 cupcakes made by our talented cooking students. Thank you to Kevin Duddy and Evelyn Harrington for organising these activities. Our students had a wonderful week. Thanks also to Gavin Lane and Kevin Duddy who cooked all of the sausages.
