Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
We deeply value the strong sense of community that our younger students have cultivated throughout the year. It is truly heartwarming to witness the kindness, manners and genuine care they exhibit toward one another, both inside the classroom and during their playtimes. Their efforts beautifully reflect our school's core value of Community.
We take immense pride in their growth and development in building connections this year. We eagerly anticipate watching these friendships flourish even further in the years to come.
Keep being outstanding members of our community, Prep students!
During the in-visit from TaskWorks, our Year One students explored how simple machines are used in everyday life. They learned about springs, levers, gears, wheels, screws and inclined planes. The children looked at life-size equipment and saw simple machines in action. They learned about the history and development of simple machines and how they are used to make our lives easier.
As part of our Author Studies Unit in English, the Year 2's have been reading books from various authors and studying their writing style. They were even visited by various hilarious characters from Mo Willems’ books. The first character that visited was a pigeon who tried to persuade the Year 2's to let him drive off with a bus. They were then visited by lovely Nanette, who couldn’t hold back her hunger for baguettes, and ended up consuming an entire baguette by herself! Fortunately, there were still some baguettes left for the Year 2's to enjoy with butter. This helped them discover why Nanette could not resist the baguettes. Feeling inspired by Mo Willems' books, the Year 2's created their own pigeon comic, alongside a written opinion piece on what they thought was the best food in the world!
Over the past week in English, students have been applying their knowledge of Viking mythology and paragraph structure by writing a character description of a Viking god or goddess. We have been very impressed by each student's ability to follow every step of the writing process. The Year 3's have turned their ideas into writing that they are very proud of. We invite all families to come see their hard work in person on Family Friday or online via Seesaw.
In English Year 4 have been writing a narrative about Polly the zookeeper using the correct narrative structure. They have practised writing in paragraphs, varying sentence types and using descriptive words.
Year 4 have had lots of fun in Science learning about how matter can change states - eg. a solid becoming a liquid. They learnt about the melting point of water, then completed an experiment where they used their science knowledge to plan different ways to melt ice-cubes, ending with testing which method was most effective!
In Humanities lessons this semester, we have been learning all about the government and how the election process is carried out. Last Thursday, the Year 5 students participated in an in-visit called 'The Parliament Process'. This in-visit provided students with the opportunity to engage in an interactive federal election where they learned about preferential voting and absolute majorities. They then participated in a Federal Parliament role play, with costumes and props, to illustrate how bills become laws. The students were so engaged throughout their session and loved getting involved!
As we approach the end of Term 4, Year 6 students are looking to the future as they prepare for their transition to high school. We have been learning how to study efficiently, effectively use mind maps and the importance of creating a distraction free study zone.
We also welcomed Ms. Patricia Sklavakis, the Assistant Principal of Port Melbourne Secondary College, who spoke to the students about daily schedules, homework and emphasised the importance of regular reading. She reassured the students by answering their questions and reminded them the transition to high school can take the entire year. Students left on a high & full of excitement as it was a very informative session. We were very grateful that she made the time to come to SMPS. We look forward to welcoming Albert Park College next week!
