Food Technology - ACC Culinary Competition

On Wednesday 18th May, Dominic Kaka, Alexander Tsipos, Patrick Bunning and Charles Van Rest of Year 11, represented Mazenod College in the ACC Culinary Competition at Parade College in Bundoora.

The students performed exceptionally well to produce ‘Parmesan and herb-crusted lamb fillet with mashed potatoes, pea puree and roast butternut squash, served with a red wine jus’ and a dessert, ‘Chocolate and peanut mousse with strawberry and rhubarb compote, chocolate crumb, candied peanuts and honeycomb’.

Under time pressure, with limited space and a lack of familiarity with the commercial cooking equipment, the students excelled to finish in 3rd place, demonstrating numerous strengths including teamwork, creativity and perseverance.  On the day of the competition, the meals were judged by 2 chefs from the Australian Culinary Federation, and they shared years of experience and advice with the students.

The students spent a significant amount of time preparing for the competition, researching what to cook (their meals had to include 5 seasonal ingredients) and undertaking 2 practices at school.  They are to be commended for their detailed planning and precision production of such impressive meals.

Congratulations Dominic, Alexander, Patrick and Charles!  A truly impressive achievement!

2022 Mazenod Federal Election Breakfast

On Friday last week, Mazenod Library staff and the Humanities Faculty hosted the Federal Election Breakfast as a lead-in to the 2022 Federal Election on Saturday.

Approximately 160 students and staff attended and cast their votes in the mock election whilst enjoying breakfast of toast, yoghurt, muffins and delicious democracy sausage rolls. Politics studies are held in high regard at Mazenod and it was encouraging to see students and staff sharing opinions, knowledge and passions with such enthusiasm in preparation for the big day.

Staff and students were asked, via a secret ballot, about their voting preferences and which issues were most important to them; the top two issues selected were the economy and climate change. Pleasingly, almost twice as many votes were cast as at our last Federal Election breakfast in 2019

The Australian electoral system reminds us to be grateful for the democratic society in which we live and the importance of our role of engendering in our students an appreciation of the power of their voice to government.
