Learning and Teaching

Many of our young men are preparing for their first round of formal examinations in the coming weeks (in Years 8-12).

While this can be an intimidating experience, it is important to put them in context and reduce anxiety for students. Quite simply, our brains perform their best when they are in ‘flow’ – which is a state somewhere between boredom (under-stimulation) and anxiety (feeling overwhelmed).

Students should be reminded of one key reality: while exams are a great chance to show positive progress, they cannot harm you. This builds feelings of empowerment and motivation, while decreasing fear, a dangerous and unhelpful exam response.

It is one thing to say ‘prepare for your exams’ and another entirely to empower young people to do that well. Each student has received a copy of the card you see displayed on this page. It highlights three simple steps every student can follow to achieve their best exam preparation.

I have also embedded a five minute explainer video below that parents should feel empowered to watch with their son(s).

Let us support our students so that exams become an exciting opportunity to shine, not a monster to avoid.
