National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieve reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June.
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were recognised in the Census and the High Court Mabo decision Were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were recognised as Traditional Owners and Custodians of land.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of us all as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here at St Joseph's we will be commencing the FIRE Carrier Program. The aim of the FIRE (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) Carrier Project is to promote respect, fairness and inclusion for Aboriginal people. The FIRE Carrier Project promotes enculturation and reconciliation. As a part of the FIRE Carrier project a Covenant is written. This is similar to a Reconciliation Action Plan.
Climate Action Grant
Well done Jane (she has done it again) on your application for the Mornington Peninsula's Climate Action Grant. Jane was successful and St Joseph's will receive a grant of $2500 to put towards a project concerning the protection and enhancement of biodiversity
values in marine, coastal and terrestrial environments. This will include an Indigenous perspective and include the FIRE Carrier program. Watch this space for more details in the coming weeks!
