ANZAC Day commemorations

We are incredibly proud of all our students who attended ANZAC Day ceremonies and marches on Monday 25 April.

Eliza Topham, Grace Simonetis (Year 11) and Amelia Howell (Year 12) represented the College at the Dawn Service at the Hobart Cenotaph, where they were given the honour of singing the national anthem.

The students also had the opportunity to meet with Tasmanian Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC and Kieran Lennard, president of Hobart RSL.

Thank you to Scott Weston, Learning Leader Performing Arts, Visual Arts and LOTE, for organising this opportunity for our students.

It was also wonderful to see Rose Smith (Year 8) represent SMC along with her brother Owen (Year 9 at St Virgil's College) at both the Dawn Service in Hobart and the Brighton Service.

Pictured below are Rose and Owen standing beside tree #67, which commemorates Pte Walter Harold Carr, their grandmother's great uncle - a very special and moving experience.

Students get a 'PPEP' talk

It was a privilege to welcome Lucy Haass of The Pelvic Pain Foundation of Australia to the College last term for a positive information session on pelvic pain (which affects both women and men) and endometriosis - a chronic condition that affects at least one in 10 women of reproductive age globally.

Our Year 10 students found it valuable learning about what is 'normal' and what is not, and were encouraged to seek help from their GP or health professional early if they were concerned about their pain symptoms or needed support.

In search of safety

On Thursday 7 and April 8 April, as part of our English unit, 'Strangers in a strange land', we welcomed speakers from Red Cross to our Year 8 English classes to give a presentation about refugees and seekers of asylum.

We were lucky enough to hear the personal story of a former refugee. From her story, students learnt what it must be like to have to leave your home, at a young age, to seek refuge in another country.

The sessions were informative and encouraged Year 8 students to empathise with the plight of millions of displaced people who exist in the world through no fault of their own.

A 'raisin' to celebrate

A big thank you to all our families who supported our Cripps hot cross bun drive in Term 1 by purchasing a pack of these delicious treats to enjoy over the Easter break.

With your help, we raised $1,235 for Project Compassion 2022, the Lenten fundraising campaign by Caritas Australia. An egg-cellent effort!
