Writing a Postcard to Yaizu

About 60 years ago, Yaizu fishing boats came to Hobart for supplies and rest. Relationships started and then a friendship agreement was signed. The agreement recognised both cities wanting to grow to understand each other. It is an agreement for peace and reconciliation. 

Over 45 years, there have been many activities, exchanges and shared visits. Through this friendship, people in Hobart and Yaizu are rewarded with new ways of seeing, thinking and feeling. There has been annual student exchange where students, teachers, their schools, families and friends have come together to celebrate what we have in common and explore our differences. 

This friendship has been built on respect and has developed a rich life in others’ culture and kindness for all people.

In this spirit, students from Grade 4 to Year 10 have written a postcard in Japanese to be sent to a fellow student in Yaizu. 

Japanese Lunch

To celebrate the sister city relationship, schools in Yaizu enjoyed an Australian lunch. In Hobart, students in the Junior School had the opportunity to enjoy a ‘Japanese lunch’ on Friday March 30.  There was a choice of sushi and the favourite filling was teriyaki chicken. Comments from the students included:

The City of Hobart complemented the food by providing all students from Grade 3-6 with the experience of trying mugicha (bayley tea). It is caffeine free and is drunk cold. Comments from the students included:
