Incursions with Visiting Artists

In the Art Department we have had several incursions with artists visiting Clemes classes to talk to students about their art practice, Penny Smith (Ceramics) and Rosie Hastie (Photography).

We have also had our first session with Nanna Bayer, a Ceramic artist who is running incursion workshops with our Clemes students and art department staff. She has been teaching us to use the Japanese technique Nerikomi. Students mixed stains into the porcelain, and then combine the coloured clays to create blocks of coloured clay that will yield beautiful patterns. Nanna Bayer will return on the 10 April to show us how to use the clay to create a variety of ceramics objects and forms.

Fashion Drawing Workshop

Sophie Goodluck, an old scholar and recent fashion design graduate from RMIT, conducted a fashion drawing workshop with Years 9 & 10 Textiles students. Students learnt a range of skills including analysing and drawing fashion figures, sketching croquis designs, drawing different types of fabrics and rendering techniques.

Students had a great time working with an industry expert and we may have some budding designers on the rise.

The class has been invited to attend the launch of Sophie’s fashion label to see first-hand some of the workings of the fashion industry.

We have some beautiful student artworks on display near our main reception area at the Commercial Road campus. With frequently changing displays, it's always worth a look if you are passing through!

Clemes Twilight Concert

The musical year at Friends’ started with a flourish at the first Clemes Twilight Concert for 2019. The concert featured 19 students from the UTAS Music, IB Music and TCE Music classes, each performing as soloists or in one instance as a duet.

Members of the UTAS Music class also combined to perform a Chick Corea’s Spain, which featured a superb lead part on the flute by Beatrice Farquhar-Jones, and improvised solos by Julian Clarke and Darcy Wright.

Year 7s with Mwase Makalani

A number of Year 7 Music classes recently had the pleasure of working with Mwase Makalani, a musician specialising in drum circles and African percussion. Mwase introduced the students to basic hand drumming techniques as well as important ensemble and improvisatory skills.

The students thoroughly enjoyed working with Mwase with the skills learnt used as the basis of small-group percussion work later in the term.
