TOP TIPS TO ENCOURAGE LANGUAGE

Commenting rather than questioning.

It is really tempting to ask lots of questions of our children, for example, “What’s this?”, “What are you doing?” But if our children have limited spoken language they may not have the words to answer.  Try commenting on what is happening or what you or your child is doing.  For example, it is more helpful to say “look, it’s a peacock/possum”, or, “washing hands”. It is important to make a direct link between the word and the item by pointing, showing, or touching the item.
