RSL Matters

As the RSL Student Liaison Officers for 2021, we have been given the opportunity to work closely with the Kedron Wavell RSL.  The role of these positions is to communicate with the RSL about college life, attend monthly meetings, and participate in different events throughout the year.

Our first engagement in these positions was to spend a week before Christmas, within the sub-branch office, with the task of telephoning members of the RSL aged over 80 to wish them a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.  Usually, the Liaison Students, along with the phone calls, go to visit and deliver hampers; however, due to health concerns, this was not an option  - although, on these calls, we had some amazing chats about upcoming holidays, family visits, and much more.  Many were happy to socialise with the younger generation, as some have been quarantined for the most part of the year.  Along with eight other Liaison Students and the awesome Liaison Supervisor, Mr Greg Peake, we had an extremely enjoyable time, with loads of milkshakes and toasted sandwiches to keep us full for days.

The RSL obviously never were sick of the two of us, as Greg called us up the next week asking if we could assist with the Emergency Medical Alarms (EMA).  We were happy to oblige as we had such a good time the previous week.  This week allowed us to have lunch with the President of the sub-branch, Mr Ken Roma - we were extremely grateful for even more milkshakes and toasted sandwiches!

Having previously attended two meetings, we were able to attend our third on 9 March. These meetings have opened our eyes to the tireless work and effort that all the volunteers and members put into the club.  Even though they are very informative, many laughs are shared with the continuous jokes and playful attitudes of all the committee and members, and they are definitely a highlight of the month and something to which we look forward.
