Uniform and Second Hand Uniform Update

Uniform Survey

The Girton Grammar School Student Uniform and Personal Presentation Policy is currently being reviewed, and students, staff and parents are invited to contribute their thoughts to inform an updated policy.

This is not a uniform review per se, but a review of policy. With student uniform items recently refreshed, there is no intention to change the appearance or otherwise of current uniform items, but rather, to better understand our community's general attitude to the uniform, which will be reflected in an updated policy.

Below is a link to a five-minute survey that you are invited to complete by Friday, 12th March 2021. The surveys are the same for all sections of the school community, although the staff survey contains some additional questions about the current Staff Dress Code.

The Sisters Are Back!

SisterWorks has started a new project in the Junior School. Together with the Old Church on the Hill group, they have secured a contract to make heat bags to sell. Five tonnes of lupins and wheat have been delivered to the school, with the goal of creating 5,000 heat bags.

The next project with SisterWorks in relation to our old uniforms is to repurpose the woollen school jumpers that require repairs. Our aim is to have jumpers mended and the school logo covered before winter arrives so that we can donate them to those in need.

Following the donation last year of more than 1,200 second-hand Girton Junior School uniform items to the Pangamihan Elementary School in the Philippines, in Term 2 we hope to begin the repurposing of the remaining senior school uniforms together with SisterWorks.

SisterWorks is a Melbourne based organisation supporting female refugees. Since establishing services in Bendigo, a group of "Sisters" has been working in the Girton Grammar Junior School rebranding old Girton uniform items, and after a long COVID-break, they are returning to Girton.

One of our Junior School parents, Kate Mahony, has coordinated the repurposing project, which commenced with operating our second-hand uniform shop and using proceeds from the sale of uniform items to support the work of the Sisters.

Donations to the Second Hand Uniform Shop

All proceeds from the sale of second-hand uniforms are donated to SisterWorks or used to pay for their services in repurposing Girton uniform items.

SisterWorks is dedicated to empowering women, and their mantra is that to support each other is to strengthen each other. In particular, the group brings women together in friendship and provides them with skills that they can use immediately to work and support themselves financially.

We ask that only school uniform items that families are willing to donate be placed in the collection bins around the school or dropped off at the second hand uniform shop in the Junior School.

The Second Hand Uniform Shop will no longer be selling items on consignment. If you currently have any items in the Second Hand Uniform and wish to sell them privately, please collect them when the shop is open before the 5th March, otherwise items will be sold as a donation.

Please ensure that all donated items are clean and ready for either sale or repurposing so that our volunteers do not need to take them home to wash.

If families would like to sell uniform items, there is a Facebook page dedicated to this service:

Volunteers are always needed at the Second Hand Uniform Shop so if you have any time you are able to contribute to this important service please email katemahony@girton.vic.edu.au
