ACL Prehab - What’s the go?

An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a devastating short-term injury, with a significant impact on quality of life and a person's ability to participate in sport and physical activity. However, it is a more significant problem in the long-term with decreased function quality of life (Filbay et al 2015).

ACL injuries have exhibited the highest incidence and prevalence of all injury categories in AFLW, a trend consistent with worldwide published female athlete ACL injury data. There were 7.5 ACL injuries per 1000 player hours compared to 5.1 in 2019. The good news is that ACL injuries are largely preventable. All it takes is the simple addition of a regular injury prevention exercise program to reduce the risk of all primary ACL injuries by 50 per cent, and all non-contact ACL injuries in females by 67 per cent (Webster & Hewett 2018). Girton’s Sports Excellence Programme spends time each week looking at ACL Prevention techniques and educates athletes on correct landing mechanics as well as reduction tools.

Whats happening in the programme??

First Year Athletes (Foundation One)

The beginning of the 2021 school year in the Sports Excellence Programme for our Foundation students has brought on many new and engaging challenges. The introductory exercises the students have been completing target the development of their core strength whilst controlling their breathing. This provides our athletes the foundations to move effectively and efficiently. The students have begun noticing the positioning of their bodies, including flexed and neutral spines, and their knee positioning through squatting and glute bridges. These exercises aim to strengthen their muscles and ultimately prevent injury whilst playing sport. With alarming increases in youth injuries, it is fantastic to see so many students applying effort each morning and night and enjoying learning about their bodies through movement.

We look forward to an exciting year ahead, facilitating the development of the next generation of Girton athletes.
