Lockdown: Third Times A Charm?

Please enjoy a piece of writing by Chelsea White regarding her thoughts on the snap lockdown.

Friday: Swimming carnival

Laughing and talking around the pools ceases suddenly when a voice rings out on a microphone.

“Can all the students please go to their house areas and be seated.”

My friends look at each other confused. I glance upwards.

Nope, no clouds in the sky, so can’t be the weather like last year.

We sit down on our claimed spot, wrapping towels around ourselves to keep warm. Everyone else follows suit into their own-coloured territory.

While the announcer addresses the whole school, my head is spinning while I think of the important reason that has disrupted the races. But only one possible, dreaded reason sticks in my head.

Lockdown.

But is it dreaded? This question sends ripples in my mind. It’s almost like a glass half full or half empty question. Other than the fact I wouldn’t be able to see people in person, it seems ok. Considering we’ve done this two times before it wouldn’t be too hard to get back into the groove of online learning.

It will be nice to slow down. To just sit outside and close my eyes. To feel the wind ruffling my hair, breathing in the fresh country air and seeing land stretch as far as the horizon.

Freedom.

It’s such a precious thing, but it’s there in some shape or form. Although you may be “trapped” at home, it gives time to do things, which is nice for someone who rushes to music, sports and other co-currics.

I choose the cup half full. Lockdown isn’t too bad, as long as you look for the positives. Sounds cheesy, I know, and you’ve probably heard it before, but it’s true. Talking about enjoying, I have a dam that longs to be kayaked.
