SENIOR SCHOOL

SENIOR LEARNING CENTRE

It has been so great to see so many year 10, 11 and 12 students using the SLC to study during non- class time, play during recess and lunch and of course taking the obligatory selfies (with a staff phone)! We are proud of the way students are supporting one another with peer teaching as well as creating a space that is welcoming. In coming weeks, the Senior Leadership students will be launching peer led study sessions for the year 11 and 12 students on a Wednesday afternoon from 2pm, what a fantastic example of student agency at the college.

DANCE IS BACK!

Dance is back and bigger than ever at MESC.  In addition to having a Year 9 Dance class run within the timetable this semester, we also have a student led whole school extracurricular dance program running Wednesday after school in Banksia Hall and Thursday lunch times in the MLC. The program involves dance technique classes/workshops run by both our senior students and staff, a competition troupe, guest choreographers and exciting excursions into the Dance industry.

This week we started our mixed year level lyrical/contemporary troupe and already it is looking fantastic.

If you’re interested in getting involved, it is not too late. Please contact Mrs Ashleigh Bell (abell@mesc.vic.edu.au) or visit her in the Senior School Office in the SLC.

SENIOR PATHWAYS PROGRAM

YEAR 11 CONNECT

Following on from the Year 12 CONNECT session over the last couple of weeks, Year 11 students have also been working on understanding VCE processes, such as the significance of course work, assessments, study designs and study scores.

We had discussions around what it takes to get high study scores in VCE and how our goals would assist us in helping to identify what we need to do. Following this, the students created their goals and steps to achieve them.

The next step is to make sure that we discuss them with our teachers and develop a timetable to work towards our goals.

YEAR 11 & 12 STUDENT LED STUDY PROGRAM (CONNECT)

Beginning Week 7 (Wednesday the 10th of March) At the beginning of the year, Year 12 Student Leaders met with Student Pathways Program Leaders to discuss how their Connect sessions could be more productive in terms of their learning. Students recognised that it is important that they’re independent learners, and thus, the study led study program was created.

The model below is the program will be trialling with students over the next 3 – 4 weeks.

At the end of the term, students will be offered the opportunity to provide feedback to help further refine the program.

SESSIONS STRUCTURE

(Includes both Year 11 and 12)

  • All subjects are grouped into rotations.
  • A subject from each group runs every week. English is a rotation of its own and will be run separately.
  • Subjects will run in 4 different locations to allow for smaller group work and for focused study.
  • Even if you chose individual study, you still have access to peers who are able to guide, clarify and assist when needed.

SUBJECT ROTATIONS

Students of these subjects MUST attend their subject sessions and work towards their goal/s in this subject. They can either work individually in the assigned space or work as a small group.

If there is a clash between subjects, a student will choose the subject of priority and attend this session.

ELEVATE POSITIVE PARENTING WEBINARS

Are continuing!

You may recall that parents of Mount Eliza SC have exclusive access to Elevate Education’s Parent Webinar Series for Term 1, 2021.  The recent webinar was on Time Management - how to end the battle over homework deadlines, study schedules and prioritisation. It aired live on Wednesday 24th February, but you can access the replay

Additionally, the next webinar is on Tech Devices - setting boundaries and promoting self-regulation with teens. The webinar will help to answer your questions around 'how much screen-time is too much", how to create positive habit-loops with your child, and what apps and technology you can use to help your child, rather than hinder them. You can register for that event here.

PROGRESS REPORTS & REFLECTION

That time of the year is approaching where both our Unit 1/2, and Unit 3/4 students are undergoing their first series of School Assessed Coursework (SACs). We want to take this opportunity to remind students of the important of reading and reflecting on their progress reports, feedback from their SACs to help inform their learning moving forward.

YEAR 12 STUDENT/PARENT MEETINGS WITH LEADERSHIP

In the coming weeks, Year 12 students and families will have the opportunity to do this with our leadership team. We encourage ALL our Year 12 families to book a meeting time with James Barut (Acting Principal), Danni Vaughan (Assistant Principal) or Ashleigh Bell (Senior Pathways Leader). This can be done via COMPASS through the Student Conferences Tab.
