Outdoor Adventures

Mr Skewe’s Year 11 Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies class recently ventured down to Wilson’s Promontory for a few days of fun and learning. They set up camp at Tidal River and used this as a base to explore some of the most stunning places of the ‘Prom’.

We spoke to Connor Fallon about his experiences on camp. Climbing Mount Oberon on the first night was a nice way to tire out the students, but unfortunately, when the group made it to the top, their hard work was not rewarded. They were hoping to see a brilliant sunset, however, the clouds interfered with this and visibility was poor.

Not to worry, the next night they watched the sun setting over Squeaky beach and according to Connor, it was the best sunset he has seen. Other adventures included boogie boarding at Norman Beach, completing the Lilly Pilly Gully walk, climbing Mount Bishop and visiting the Big Drift sand dune.

The camp wasn’t just about fun and adventure, learning about coastal environments was also a key feature of the experience. Connor believes Wilsons Promontory is the best place to learn about diverse environments, with the stunning coastal and marine environment, and cool temperate rainforest all easily accessible from Tidal River.

He does admit, though, he still has plenty of learning to do when it comes to camping. Next time, he aims to lift his food game because he was jealous of Mr Skewes culinary skills and the food him and Ms Benham were eating. Good luck!

What a fantastic learning experience in a magnificent environment! A big thank you to Mr Skewes and Ms Benham for giving up their time and energy to allow this opportunity for our students.
