Then & Now
Susan Nedumannil
Here’s a photograph of a young Mrs Nedumannil. When this photograph was taken Mrs Ned was 12 or 13 years old and her parents arranged for professional family photographs to be taken. This is one of the photographs taken on the day. Mrs Ned had several photographs taken with her younger brother and one of the framed pictures was proudly displayed in her parent’s house from then on.
Mrs Ned grew up in the city of Trivandrum, capital of the southern Indian state of Kerala. She lived there until she was 21. Shortly after she married Mr Ned, they moved to South Africa for work opportunities and they spent 14 years there. Although they loved South Africa and they made many friends and meaningful connections, after they were robbed twice, they decided it was time for a new country and new opportunities.
Their options were the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia. Australia ended up working out the best and they arrived in 2003. Mrs Ned is glad they made the choice to live and work in Australia and she has enjoyed raising her family here. She loves visits back to India and after a few years interrupted by COVID, she is hoping for a return visit sometime this year.
Thanks for sharing, Mrs Ned. We’re glad you decided to settle in Australia too!
