Sports Leaders' Breakfast

On Thursday the 25th of February, the Senior Sports Committee Leaders, Charlene Nheu, Emily Telley, Cheyenne Anthony and Sienna Quinn, were invited to attend a breakfast at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, to launch the SCSA Sporting Competition for 2021. Sports Leaders and representatives from a range of other schools involved in SCSA competition attended the breakfast, as well as current AFLW Chief Executive and Olympic Medalist Nicole Livingstone.Nicole shared her trailblazing journey with the young leaders, from detailing her incredible training regime to ultimately becoming one of Australia's most successful Olympians, Sports Commentators and Sports Executives. She spoke of the challenges she has faced along the way, and shared invaluable advice about how to overcome barriers that women face when participating in sport, media and business. Nicole discussed with the students the vision for the AFLW moving forward and how they aim to promote equality, fairness and increase participation rates amongst women in sports. It was a great way to begin the SCSA year, with many of the Killester students eager to participate and represent the school in a range of sports and activities.

Swimming by Vivien Owens Year 10

On Wednesday the 10th, we had the annual SCSA swimming carnival. Killester has moved up a division this year due to outstanding performance in the past, so all of the girls were very excited to face the new competition. A change in division also calls for a change in dinner, so the night started with some hot potatoes. We then had a quick team meeting and got on the bus to MSAC.

At last we arrived at the centre and warmed up in the pool. There were about 50 girls representing Killester this year, which includes girls from Years 7 to 10. There weren't any Year 11s or 12s because they were on camp.

All of the girls swam their absolute best on the night, but unfortunately the competition was just too strong for us. The juniors finished off 5th, and the intermediates came 4th. Overall, Killester came 5th. While this isn't our best result, we are proud of the school for moving up into Division 2. The next challenge is to tackle the rest of the teams in this new division!

The night finished off with the bus ride back to Killester. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, every swimmer came back together. Some girls (and most teachers) took a nap, while others participated in a sing-along led by the Year 10s.

Even though we didn't win, everyone still was still in good spirits after the big night. Thank you to the students who helped out on the night, and every girl who put their name down to swim. Also a big thanks to all of the PE staff and other teachers who helped make this night happen for us.

Tennis by Simone Dunker Year 11

On Tuesday 9th March, Killester's Junior, Intermediate and Senior tennis team participated in the SCSA Tennis Competition held at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club.  Teams Killester versed consisted of OLSH (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), Sacred Heart Geelong, Clonard College, Ave Maria and CLC (Catholic Ladies College).  The girls worked hard and played really well, great competition and sportsmanship to be seen out on the courts.  Overall it was a great experience and would be excited to come play again next year.

METS Incursion

On the 4th of March the Year 12 Physical Education class had an incursion about Biomechanics. The program involved Luke from METS coming to Killester  and revisiting and summarising topics we had been studying  in class such as inertia, momentum, levers etc.

Throughout periods one and two we put our theoretical knowledge about these topics into practical examples to gain a better understanding of  the concepts. We did various activities using specialised equipment they provided such as run through gates which measured our speed, jump onto a force plate with bent knees then straight knees to measure the impulse, as well as stand on a spinning disc  and spin while manipulating our body to either increase or decrease angular velocity.  It was very enjoyable  and a great experience for our class.

On behalf of the Year 12 PE class, we would like to thank the METS program  and  Ms Sadler for organising it.
