VCAL SYN FM Incursion

On the 2nd of March, the Year 11 and 12s got to experience being with SYN FM which is a youth media radio organization. Our speaker, named Paul, introduced us to what radio is all about and how SYN FM works. We were then split into 3-4 groups to produce a script that followed a structure which enabled us to work in a team to think of what topic we would like to talk about when we were recording for the radio. I loved getting to experience producing live radio for the first time and something that really interested me was that students were able to sign up if they were interested in being part of SYN FM. Jasmine Nicolas

For the activity I was able to write up a script with my two friends, Mary and Vi. We talked about racism against Asians and why it shouldn't be normalised. When recording I was very nervous when speaking however I felt good that I was bringing more awareness to racism. Julianne Ngo

When it was our turn to speak about our topic we had to move quickly to our spot. I was nervous speaking to the microphone but I tried and it was good. I should have practiced beforehand. Overall it was a good experience. Cecilia Nguyen

On the 2nd of March SYN FM, we had an incursion and made a live radio podcast. SYN FM is all about youths perspective. We had to write a script in groups of 3-4 and make it interesting. It was cool to see the equipment that is used to make a radio podcast. I worked in a group with Jasmine and Itrat, our live radio was about our opinions on how we felt about online learning and what were the pros and cons. I enjoyed learning how live radio is made and what is involved. Bianca

Young Workers Centre

On Tuesday the 16th of March, Scott from the Young Workers Centre (https://www.youngworkers.org.au/ or 1800 714 754) visited the Intermediate and Senior VCAL students. He spoke about your rights at work and occupational health and safety.

The feedback received was:

Scott, a representative from ‘Young Working Centre’ came in today and talked to us about what our rights are as an employee. This included safety at work place, contracts, and payment procedures. I got to know stories about other employees such as Anna who was underpaid for 8 months at the Barry Cafe. I got to learn about the rights and responsibilities of an employee and an employer. Safety tricks about keeping your job secured and raising an issue without getting fired is a priority, meaning we need a witness for every meeting just in case something goes wrong. No job is worth more than my health and safety. Scott was clear with his explanations. He also mentioned some organisations that can help employees with their jobs and legally help them get what they need and what they deserve. Itrat Zahra

Today I felt very appreciative when Mr Scott spent the time to come to Killester College to present us about Health and Safety and rules we need to know about the workplace. He provided the information really clearly and I learned some new tips such as I should check and read the contract carefully before starting the job because it is about my work safety. I realised how bad the issue is when I have been paid by cash. Scott gave examples that related to real-life too. Thank you so much for your time and the information you gave us and I will use it for my working journey. Khan Vi Do
