Year 3 News

This week the Year 3 students have been learning to use persuasive language. They have been involved in the following activities to support this:

  • Analysing the effectiveness of television commercials
  • Playing the “Agee or Disagree” game where students are exposed to a statement and they have to agree or disagree and justify their position.
  • Writing activity: Which picture is best. Students were required to look at four photos and choose their favourite with justification.
  • Mini Debates: The students formed groups and created arguments for or against the statement. The teams then battled it out in the form of a mini debate.

These are some of the statements the students chose to argue:

  1. There should be a five day weekend and a two day week
  2. Zoos should be banned
  3. Children should run schools
  4. The canteen should not sell ice-cream

Here are some examples of their arguments:

“I disagree that children should run schools. The students need the foundations of school to help educate them. I don’t know how to run schools and I’m sure you agree with me that the teachers know more than us.”

“I strongly agree that it should be an opposite weekend because you would get more sleep. Children need sleep to grow nice and healthy and you would only need to wake up early two days. Now you should 100% agree with me.”

Alannah 3B

“I know that children should not run school because they are not knowledgeable enough. For example, how would kids learn? That is why I totally disagree. Plus teachers went to university for four years to learn about how to be a teacher!”

Ella-Rose 3A

“I strongly agree that zoos should be banned because it is hard to watch animals stress. Imagine if you were found and straight away locked in a truck for hours. I would be scared to have been taken away from my home to put me in captivity. Just imagine sitting in a cage right now!”
