Year One Happenings

Inquiry

This past fortnight the year one students have been fully immersed in their unit of Inquiry focusing on the impact weather has on our lives. We have worn many hats including cloud watchers and meteorologists. We have spent time outside, writing our observations of the clouds from day to day. Over the past fortnight we have been lucky to witness Stratus, Cumulonimbus, Cumulus and Cirrus clouds. We have also learnt many new adjectives and used these to not only help describe the clouds in our sky but the vast weather conditions of our World.

The students enjoyed a series of lessons exploring, comparing and finding similarities between different types of severe weather. The pictures below show the students using a venn diagram to compare tornadoes to floods.

Over the next week we will be equipping the children with the knowledge and skills needed to present their posters, forecasting the weather for an Australian capital city.

Maths

The children have enjoyed revising skip counting patterns in the classroom. We have introduced a range of songs to the children, to assist in counting by 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. We have utilised the interactive hundreds chart on the interactive whiteboard, to assist in learning how to skip count from any given number. The children have also been introduced to describing and predicting number patterns through the use of visual aids. To help cement the skip counting by 2s pattern the children were introduced to a leap frog board game that they played with a partner.
