Year 8 'Future Proofing' Study
As you might already know, we are excited to be offering the Future Proofing study to all Year 8 students at Moama Anglican Grammar School. If you haven’t already done so, please let us know of your decision regarding your child’s involvement in this study. You can visit the following website to complete the consent form online: https://www.fpstudy.org.au/Moama or return the paper form (Year 8 students only).
This study is being run by researchers at the Black Dog Institute and the University of New South Wales, along with over 170 schools, to better understand the mental health challenges of early adolescence to adulthood. Students in the study will complete surveys and try out mental health apps to identify and prevent symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The results of this study have real potential to inform government policy and the scientific community. For this reason, we are keen to get a good representation from Moama Anglican Grammar School.
The research team have recorded a 10-minute information webinar for parents. If you wish to learn more about the study, you can watch the webinar here: https://youtu.be/Mf2OsMfFKSs
Healthy Relationships and Sexuality
On Monday afternoon, all of the Year 7 students participated in a sexuality education incursion that provided lots of relevant information about puberty. Students had the opportunity to submit anonymous questions prior to the day which were then addressed by the very engaging and knowledgeable presenters. The students conducted themselves in a respectful and responsible manner and really enjoyed the session!
At the Year 8 Girls Day, students examined what bullying looks like and reflected on their own actions that people could perceive as bullying. This presented a great opportunity for inward reflection for them. They practised meditation, participated in trust activities and role played in front of the group. Overall they had a really great day and came away with plenty of ideas for positive actions to use through the year.
The Year 8 boys had an amazing time yesterday at the Boys Day - living by the three rules of engagement: Playing All In, Respect and The Vegas rule. They spent time looking at what they want out of Year 8 and who/what impacts their wants as well as looking inward and realising they are responsible for achieving their own goals. There was a lot of time spent in their tribes, competing in teamwork challenges against the other tribes. We can't give too much away due to 'The Vegas Rule'!
Year 9 students attended a full day presentation involving discussion and activities by 'Real Talk' around the theme of Love and Life. This is part of our Pastoral Care program promoting safe and respectful relationships and the day included a split gender session to discuss matters relevant to each gender.
Bacteria, Fungi and Sheep Eyes
Two types of microorganisms grown on agar plates- bacteria and fungi.
As part of their current Disease unit in Science, all Year 9 students have been investigating microorganisms in their environment. Students have exposed their agar plates to an area of choice and have been comparing the number and variety of organisms grown.
High contact surfaces (phones, computers, door handles) have proved very fruitful in the growth students have been able to observe.
To consolidate their learning on invisible waves (light, heat and sound) our Year 10 Science students completed a mammalian eye dissection. The purpose of this dissection was to examine the inner structures of the eye and identify the parts involved in vision. Thank you to Greenham Abbatoirs in Tongala for donating the eyes.
