Mellor- A hive of activity

Mellor children are busy bees, moving around the school yard on a daily basis. Targeted workshops continue to be a strong a focus in our Word Study, Reading and Secret Code individualised programs.

Word Study is a hands on word sorting approach investigating spelling patterns and broadening children's understanding of words and their meanings. This program gives children strategies to unpack unknown words when reading and writing in an interactive and fun way.

Reading Rockets caters for a range of reading and comprehension strategies to support children to become confident, capable readers.

Strategies that are our focus this semester include:

-high frequency word knowledge

-fluency

-expression

-retelling the story

-finding the main idea

- inferencing

- cause and effect

Secret Code Club gives children the opportunity to develop fluency in essential numeracy skills. Our focus for this semester will be the application of secret code strategies such as halving, doubling, number splitting, rainbow facts and skip counting when solving real life problems. There are many ways parents can support children to further develop these strategies by playing card games and dice /board games.

Goal Setting

Strengthening learning through goal setting continues to be a focus in Semester 2. Children continue to set personal achievable goals which they are constantly reflecting on and collecting evidence to show their progress and achievement.
