3. Mockingjay.

Winning makes you famous, losing means certain death. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a show on live TV in which there is only one rule: kill or be killed.  When sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister’s place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence, but Katniss has learnt what it takes to survive.  Against the odds, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark survive the first round and this reinvigorates an undercurrent desire by the general population to rebel against the Capitol. Their secret symbol of rebellion is the Mockingjay.  The final battle is vital to Katniss’ survival and that of her precinct, Katniss must become the people’s Mockingjay, no matter what the personal cost.

Maze Runner series by James Dashner This is similar to The Hunger Games, but you be the judge!

1. The Maze Runner;

2. The Scorch Trials;

3. Death Cure.

Thomas is traumatized and can only remember his first name.  He’s not alone in the Glade, an encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible maze.  Collectively known as the ‘Gladers’ they don’t know how they came to be there or what’s happened to the world outside.  Solving the Maze was supposed to end the mystery, but in fact it hasn’t.  Instead of gaining freedom, Thomas must face another trial.  The earth has become a wasteland and people are driven mad by an infection known as the Flare.

The Family Tree by Mal Peet. The Nest was the best thing my Dad ever built for me.  He built it when we moved into the new house – him, me and Mum.  But then Dad went there to hide from everyone, including Mum, and everything started going wrong.  This story is haunting, engrossing and beautifully written.
