Your best shot!

By Kirsty Meese (Team Kinder)

I don't know about you, but the first few weeks of remote learning in our house has been a little tumultuous. On the first day there was initial excitement, a blissful twenty minutes of silence as my children put on earphones and engaged in their morning meeting which was swiftly followed by some confusion, frustration and unsettledness as we started to find a new way of learning.

Moving from a regular, familiar learning at school rhythm into remote learning, is a lot like the mooring of two row boats and hopping out of one rowing boat and into another. While a child will feel comfortable in either row boat, it's the step between the row boats, when you have one leg in each boat that can feel a little wobbly. This is when children (and sometimes adults) need a secure hand, to help them across. Display trust and confidence to your child that everything will be O.K. helps your child develop confidence that they will be O.K. Let your children know that if they need any help they can come and ask you, ask their friends or teachers, or that you can find out the answer together.

Let them know that this is new for all of us and that we're all learning together. And at the end of the school day (or maybe even during the school day) give them a really big hug and tell them how you know that it all feels a bit tricky right now, but you're so very proud of them for giving it their best shot!

And as a parent, know that this too shall pass, it might feel like a kidney stone, but it will pass!
