Remembrance Day
Friday 11 November
On Remembrance Day, Friday 11 November, myself and a group of students went to the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate Remembrance Day.
I attended the event bearing my Great Grandfather's medals that he was awarded in WW2, out of respect for him and other Veterans. I was tasked with laying the wreath of flowers on the Shrine steps on behalf of the school.
During the ceremony, many emotions were apparent throughout the crowd; respect for current and fallen Veterans, sadness for the sacrifices made by our soldiers, and pride for the courage and bravery our soldiers have shown during times of war.
When the time came, we were the first school to lay a wreath and I was the first student to walk up to the steps. I felt quite privileged and honoured to be able to show respect towards our past and present soldiers that had fought in wars for our country.
The event showed me, and others, how much we respect and value our soldiers, that have fought and are fighting. I hope next year more students do attend the ceremonies in the city and show their respect to our Veterans past and present, those that have fallen and soldiers currently in military combat.
