Australian Schools Championships
Students from the Year 10 EIS Basketball Program have spent the last week competing in the Australian Schools Basketball Championships which have been held at Nunawading, Knox, Fairhills and the State Basketball centres.
The week started on Sunday evening, with games held each day of the week.
The boys were competing in 17 Division 3/4 and the Girls were in 17 Division 3.
Monday saw both teams scheduled with 1 game. After a scrappy start, the boys managed to get their game going late, to pull away with a comfortable win. The girls unfortunately could never get going in their game against Central Coast Adventist School, going down by 20.
On Tuesday both teams had 2 games, playing against Aquinas College in the morning and Denmark College in the afternoon. The morning games saw both teams outclassed against some very skilled opposition, with both teams losing comfortably. The afternoon’s games were kicked off with the boys taking a very comfortable win against Denmark’s 2nd team. The girls once again struggled to get going early and found themselves down by around 20, most of the game. A late push saw the girls draw within 8, but unfortunately, they could not get any closer.
On Wednesday morning, the boys faced Phoenix College. After being down early, the boys managed to fight their way back into the game and finished strongly to win comfortably. The girls then managed their first win of the tournament, beating Bonnyrigg College. In the afternoon, the boys once again had a comfortable win, taking their record to 4 and 1.
Thursday morning saw the boys face an undefeated Berwick Grammar. The boys competed hard, but were out classed going down placing them 3rd in the pool, which would mean they were playing off for the Division 4 finals. The girls had a must win game against McKinnon High School, with the winner making the medal playoffs. Unfortunately the girls could not get it going, and some good shooting from McKinnon stopped any of Lilydale’s runs. A loss meant the girls ended up placing 5th, which was a great effort.
The boys played Denmark 1 Thursday afternoon. After a very quick start, which saw the boys jump to a 10 point lead, the game managed to even out, with Denmark adjusting their defence. A back and forth game was had, in which only a couple of points would separate the teams for the remainder of the clash. Denmark managed to grab the lead late. Some missed shots and offensive rebounds to Denmark, would seal the boy’s fate, with a loss seeing them playoff for Bronze on Friday.
Friday’s game was a fairly comfortable win for the boys, winning in the end by around 15 to claim a well-deserved Bronze medal. Congratulations to all the students involved on a fantastic week.
