Vis Comm

Visual Communication Design
Is intended to develop students' visual and spatial abilities for use in not only the design field, but also across other disciplines. Students will gain confidence in drawing, illustration, presentation and organisation of visual concepts and information. Units 1 & 2 provide a solid grounding in technical drawing, rendering and use of the design process, while in Units 3 & 4, students develop their own design folios over the course of the year.
The Study Design encourages students to create and communicate through visual means to shape the everyday quality of life for individuals, communities and societies. Students will employ the design process to generate and develop creative innovative solutions and refine presentations for a wide range of design purposes. Skills will develop using a variety of manual drawing and digital methods to evolve and refine final visual solutions.
The subject is aimed at students, who require a folio of design work for entrance to further studies, or students who seek to improve the quality of their printed or electronic communications. Students must be prepared to develop drawing skills across a range of media and take full responsibility for the presentation of their design work with a high level of attention to detail.
Some of the key areas covered in the subject are:
§ Use freehand drawings for observational, visualisation and presentation.
§ Application of two and three dimensional drawing to represent the form and structure of objects.
§ Select and apply media, materials and techniques to draw and render forms.
§ Apply design thinking techniques to generate alternative ideas.
§ Apply appropriate drawing methods to make visible ideas and concepts.
§ Apply design elements and principles; generate and develop design options.
§ Use Photoshop and Illustrator to refine concept designs.
§ Practical design folio of tasks using the design process.
§ Written analysis tasks based on past, contemporary, social and cultural factors of visual communication.
