Treaty, It's Time

The First People’s Assembly of Victoria is being set up this year. It will constitute the voice of The First People’s working towards Treaties.

On Thursday, 10 October, John Eren, State Member for Lara and First People's Assembly Elections Officer Ms Hayley Couzens, visited the school and spoke to a number of Koori and Torres Strait Islander students aged 16 and older in Years 10 to 12, regarding the importance of participating in the voting process.

The discussion was around the understanding of the need for a Treaty and the importance of Koori and Torres Strait Islander young people to enrol to vote their representatives. These representatives will work with the government to create the framework for Treaty negotiations, set up the Treaty Authority (an independent umpire) and also set up and administer the Self-Determination Fund, which will support negotiating parties to be on a more equal footing with government.
