House Athletics

A threatening weather forecast and some light rain later in the day greeted everyone for the Annual Inter-house Athletics Carnival on Friday 4 March. With a full day of events, except the hurdles which were held at school on the following Monday lunchtime, students put in amazing efforts for their Houses. The friendly, yet competitive, atmosphere at our sporting carnivals make them special days for all involved.

Well done to all the Heads of Houses and House Captains for their organisation and a special congratulations to the Laidlaw students and staff on taking out the Grand Aggregate. Thanks to all the staff, parents and College Community who came and either helped or supported the students. Presentations were held at assembly last week.

Glenelg Division Athletics

This event will be held on Friday 25 March in Casterton and we are hoping for more success as we look to go BACK TO BACK for the overall aggregate shield. It would be great to see a lot of support for the students over there on the day. The team is currently training on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes with our athletics coach, Rohan Garfoot, and all competitors should make the effort to attend these sessions.

Swimming

A full report by the Swimming Captains on the ICCES Swimming Carnival held last week in Melbourne should appear in this edition of the newsletter.

Basketball

We have several teams competing in the junior finals this week and a full report with results will appear in next week’s newsletter. The Autumn/Winter Basketball season junior teams have been submitted to the HBA and will be advertised once they are ratified by the HBA grading committee in the coming week. The new season for all junior divisions will commence in the final week of Term One.

ICCES Swimming

Our short, yet sweet, swimming season came to an end last Tuesday at the ICCES carnival. With many last-minute scratchings and new recruitments, the team was Melbourne bound.

The day began with the medley relays, all teams performed well, but it was the Year 9 girls who performed the best and placing fourth overall. At the conclusion of the relays, we dove headfirst into the individual events. Congratulations to Chloe Adams (Year 8) and Isaac Shaw (Year 9) who performed well in their respective age groups. Our best individual swimmer was Lachie Rees (Year 11) who placed second in every event – a commendable achievement considering he was competing against older swimmers in the combined Year 11 and 12 group. The day concluded with the freestyle relays and in the final race of the day the Year 11 and 12 boys provided excitement for the College cheer squad by placing fourth in an extremely tight race. There really was nothing separating the teams as our final swimmer touched the wall less than a second after the winning school – a fitting end for the level of competition shown by all swimmers throughout the day.

Although College placed seventh overall, there were many small successes, with our senior boys placing fourth in the aggregate and College placing second in the Star Trophy. However, the most important achievement for many of our swimmers was recording new personal bests, after weeks of dedicated training in the pool.

We would like to thank all swimmers for their flexibility and willingness to compete in additional races on the day. Thank you to the parents who attended and supported our swimmers. Thanks also to Mrs Hausler for her role in time keeping and Mr Alexander and Mr Singh who organised the team, going above and beyond to find the best replacements for our absent swimmers.

Thanks again to all our swimmers for their dedication and for proudly representing the College in swimming throughout the season. We wish you all the best for the remainder of the year.

Junior Cricket

With the season wrapping up speedily, most of the junior cricket teams can put their bats away and enjoy a well deserved break. The U12s are finishing their season this week, with no finals being played in this age division, while the U14 Gold team finished their season in the semi-final on the weekend.

There is still plenty of action in the U16s, with a College Blue vs Gold derby in the semi-final currently underway to determine which of these teams will battle it out in the final. As it stands right now, College Gold need another 96 runs to win with 8 wickets in hand, after College Blue managed to get to 135/9 in their innings.

First XI Boys team

After the strong performance by our boys against Monivae in the annual First XI match, we have arranged another match for these players against a First XI from Ballarat Grammar. College will be hosting this match at the College Turf on Sunday 3 April. The 40 over per side match will start at 11:00am and all College supporters are invited to come and share in this special occasion.
