Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome families to our 2022 school year.

We have enjoyed the past few weeks settling back into school and reigniting friendships and our students' passion for learning. This year, we are implementing a Productive Behaviour Approach to support students learning through regulating their emotions and collaboratively working with our students when a problem arises. This approach is aligned to the Living Well Learning Well Framework which encompasses the Three Rules for Living: I am safe, I am valued, respected and cared for and I am a learner. The goal of the Productive Learners approach is to support students to learn what productive learning behaviours look, sound and feel like by working collaboratively with students to determine the cause of unproductive behaviours. The approach focuses on ensuring all children feel safe, valued, respected and cared for by building the teacher-student relationship and student connectedness to the school.

Over the next few weeks, we are explicitly teaching our students how to recognise their emotions using the Zones of Regulation, then supporting students to regulate and use strategies to move to the “Green Zone” where they feel calm, focused and ready to learn. The Blue Zone represents feeling sad, upset or tired. The yellow zone represents feeling uneasy, nervous or worried and the red zone is for students feeling angry and frustrated. By using the Zones of Regulation and building strong teacher-student relationships, we should see a reduction in unproductive behaviour as students become more aware of their emotions and develop strategies to help stay calm and focused.

Kind Regards,
