Year 5

Last week both Year 5 classes set off on a long day excursion to Port Arthur, setting off at 8am and arriving back to school at 8pm.

Our first stop was Dunalley for morning tea and a play on the playground. Next we headed to Port Arthur which saw us going on a guided tour of the site with our guides Brynn and Clare. We learnt many things from this tour and even Mr Lowe and Mrs Himson our teachers learnt new things about Port Arthur.

After a spot of lunch we headed for the docks and waiting for us was our transportation for a tour of The Isle of the Dead. Mrs Himson’s group even got a hurry up by the captain as he beeped his horn to tell them to get a move on as they walked to the ferry. We wandered around the Isle listening to the rich history and being told the difference between the grave stones.

Next we headed off to do separate activities. One group went to the Riddles and Crimes session where we were asked to be detectives in working out which Port Arthur criminal was responsible for the crime in question. The other group made their very own bricks out of actual convict brick remains from over 150 yers ago. We were able to take this brick home as a memento.

All this work made us very hungry and it was with great excitement we headed to the cafe for dinner. After we were all full, we climbed back on board the bus for the trip home that was unexpectedly not as quiet as Mrs Himson and Mr Lowe thought it would be!

A big thank you to Mrs Himson, Mr Lowe and Lu for organizing the excursion and most importantly bringing us back safe and sound.

Year 6

In Year 6, students have had the opportunity to be involved in project-based learning that builds new and different skills into being a maker, rather than a consumer. Throughout the year, students will be involved with the investigations and creations such as using recycling materials to create a toy, solving an urgent global problem, and inventing an incredible machine just to name a few!

"It's definitely different. I like it because with each task and project you get to do something different".

Hilary

"It's very different from what we did last year. It's also good because we got to work together in groups and do different things so were not always doing the same project"

Violet

"I really like the STEAM projects because you get to try and figure out different ways of doing things"
