Identity and Mission in the Primary

Throughout Lent, our College supports Project Compassion and looks at the work that Caritas Australia does to support local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

In the Year 1 classroom this week, the students heard about Anatercia's story and wrote their prayers for her.

Anatercia is a 12 year old girl living in southern Mozambique and was struggling to cope with adult responsibilities after her father passed away when she was just four years old. She moved into a hut with her elderly grandparents, along with her mother and brother, where there is no electricity, hospital, secondary school or supermarket. The family's only source of income was their farm and the crops withered from a mixture of neglect, irregular rainfall, droughts and floods. As a result, the family often went hungry. As Anatercia took on more and more responsibilities around the home to try to support her struggling family, her education began to suffer, as she travelled up to five hours to collect water every day. Caritas was there to offer her support. Anatercia was able to participate in training and gained access to psychosocial supports. Now, her quality of life has improved and she can focus on doing well at school.
