Year 7 Keyring Making

The Japanese language consists of three different scripts – hiragana, katakana and kanji. This term, Year 7 students are exploring the role and relationship between these three scripts and they are learning to recognise and write some of these the characters. As part of this journey, students started the year off with a creative activity, designing their own Japanese themed keyring with their name written in katakana characters. Their finished designs are impressive!

Yaizu – Hobart Sister City’s 45th Anniversary

This year marks the 45th Anniversary of Hobart’s longest Sister City relationship, with Yaizu, Japan. Mount Carmel has been fortunate enough to be part of this rich history, with students deepening their cultural and linguistic understanding through a range of activities over many years. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Mount Carmel families hosting Yaizu students on their annual visit to Hobart, with day trips to sites such as Town Hall, Government House, Richmond and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Mount Carmel students visiting Yaizu City, participating in language and cultural activities including being a Japanese student for the day in a Yaizu school, and being hosted by Yaizu families.
  • Postcard writing exchanges between Mount Carmel and Yaizu students.
  • Yurikamome Children’s Choir Visits, with Mount Carmel Students performing at Town Hall in 2018.
  • In 2020, Mount Carmel and Yaizu students participated in the New Lines of Sight Art Project, displayed on Hobart’s Soap Box Billboards to commemorate 30 years of student exchange between the two cities.
  • In 2021, a Yaizu-Hobart mini Olympic Challenge was held to keep the cities connected while separated physically by Covid 19 travel restrictions. Mount Carmel College students learnt about the history of the traditional toy called kendama, and explored some of the many tricks that you can do with it.
  • Our upcoming 45th Anniversary Lunch (more details below)

Yaizu - Hobart 45th Anniversary Lunch

To mark this significant milestone, students from Yaizu will enjoy an 'Australian lunch', and two schools in Hobart (Mount Carmel College and St Virgil's College) will enjoy a 'Japanese lunch'.

All Mount Carmel students studying Japanese in 2022 are invited to take part in the lunch on Wednesday 30 March. Orders must be placed and paid for no later than Friday 18 March. Unfortunately, the Year 8 students will be offsite participating in day activities on this date so will be unable to place an order, however they will be visiting a Japanese restaurant and designing and making their own obentou later this year.

If your daughter would like to order a Japanese lunch, menu options are available to order via the QKR app. Please note there are limited servings available for the Special Sushi Bowl. Orders are to be collected from the Café 1847 outside the dance studio at lunch time. Cups of Japanese tea (mugicha – barley tea) will also be provided for those who wish to try.

Japanese Children’s Day

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens will be hosting their Japanese Children’s Day event again this year from Saturday 30 April to Sunday 8 May. Mount Carmel students will once again be contributing to the display. More details will follow in future editions of The View.
