Let’s Talk About Keeping Safe
The aim of our Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum is to enable students to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes important to help them take positive action to protect and enhance their
own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing in varied and changing contexts.
At St Joseph’s, the safety and wellbeing of our students is paramount. During our PDHPE lessons, students in our younger grades are provided with learning opportunities to develop decision-making skills and adopt strategies that help to keep themselves and others healthy, safe and active. Students in our older grades are involved in lessons that help them develop an understanding of the role of protective strategies in promoting and maintaining their own and others’ safety and wellbeing.
Providing for the health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity needs of all students is a shared responsibility. A healthy and supportive school environment is enriched through the partnership between the school and our parents and families.
When out and about, children can be confronted with situations where good decision-making is vital. With this in mind, ‘talking about safety' with your child by discussing appropriate responses to certain situations will help them make decisions that will help them keep safe.
Let’s talk about safety - IN PUBLIC SPACES ALWAYS carry a contact number for your parents. (On a card attached to your clothing, written on your arms or in your phone). DO NOT walk away from family or friends without telling them where you are going, when you’ll be back and who you are with. ALWAYS walk away from fights or arguments, unpleasant or aggressive behaviour and take your friends with you. REMEMBER, always tell your parents, carer or teacher if something has happened. |
Let’s talk about safety - WALKING HOME ALWAYS identify safe places on the way home from school. DO NOT stop and talk to people you don’t know. Go straight home or to your intended destination. ALWAYS find a safe place if you feel frightened. These include schools, shops, churches or police/ fire/ambulance stations and tell them that you are frightened. NEVER get into a car with someone you don’t know. |
All children have the right to feel safe and learning about personal safety allows children to be able to Recognise body clues, React in an unsafe situation and Report to an adult who can help.
