Wellbeing

During our weekly Wellbeing lessons the children have been learning about Mindfulness, the science behind mindfulness and how by being more mindful we are more aware of our thoughts, words and actions.

The junior grades have been busy learning about emotions and how different emotions feel in our bodies. We have discussed how mindfulness can help calm our bodies when we feel strong emotions. This week we discussed the difference between a puppy mind and a mindful mind. The children made their own belly buddies to help us focus on our breath when we relax our minds with a belly breathing meditation.

"I like going to wellbeing because it helps me to relax and feel calm"

Sienna, Grade 1/2

"I like learning about our different feelings"

Alice, Grade 1/2

"I liked learning about belly breathing because its a good way to calm our body"

Lenny, Grade 1/2

The senior grades have focused on the science behind mindfulness . They have discovered parts of the brain called the Pre-Frontal Cortex and the Amygdala and the roles these parts play in our everyday lives. The students also painted meditation stones. By practicing mindfulness and mindful behaviours the children are learning that mindfulness isn't just about meditation, but acting with kindness and respect in our words, thoughts and actions to our friends and families.

"Wellbeing isn't just meditation, being mindful is something you can do every day."

Sophia, Grade 4

"It's been interesting to learn about the different parts of the brain, it's been lots of fun!"

Nash, Grade 4

"It has helped me forget about my worries, because I try to do belly breathing to feel better" Harry  Go, Grade 4

Over the course of the year children will experience a variety of social and emotional learning themes during our wellbeing lessons. However, for now Mindfulness is a base to be able to develop coping and problem solving skills to enhance their wellbeing and everyday life experiences. Mindfulness in its simplest form is really about paying attention, being present and focusing on the moment, action or experience.
