"A true leader has the confidence to stand alone,
the courage to make tough decisions,
and the compassion to listen to the needs of others.
They do not set out to be a leader,
but becomes one by the equality of their actions and the integrity of their intent"

DAV DEBATING

On Tuesday 15 March our Academy Debating teams started the 2022 debating season at St Bernard’s College in Essendon.

Our A team was off with a bye, while our B and C teams were cancelled due to some students requiring isolation. We always knew Covid would impact this season and although it was disappointing, it was unavoidable.

Our two D teams addressed the topic, ‘That sporting bodies should not accept sponsorship from gambling companies’ with both teams taking the affirmative side. The D1 team, with Olivia Portelli, Larissa Caroselli and Florencia Herrera, put up a good fight against St Columba’s College, but unfortunately lost by a narrow margin.

The D2 team - with Stella Alysandratos, Alisa Sanelli and Alice Portz – were matched against Penleigh and Essendon Grammar and won their very first debate! As well as this, Stella was voted best speaker.

With the debating season underway, our teams are determined to polish their skills and do their best to represent Academy.

McAULEY RESOURCE CENTRE

International Women’s Day came to life and was celebrated in the Library with fantastic displays and books available for the girls to interact with.  As a continuation of this theme we are also celebrating “Australian Women’s History Month” where we can reflect and learn about some of Australia’s most remarkable, history-making women.

On Friday 18 March we will also be joining the nationwide movement to take a stand against bullying on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) by displaying books promoting kindness and bullying prevention.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) kicked off its quest for Book of the Year by announcing the Notables List. It was encouraging to find that we had many of the books already on the MRC’s shelves and we are in the process of adding more of these titles to our collection.  We are looking forward to the Shortlist being announced in two weeks and then the Book of the Year will be announced in August.

Happy Reading!

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Yr 8 Home Economics

This week in Year 8 Home Economics we looked at African cuisine. The students researched ingredients used in African cooking and we prepared an African dish.  Not many of the students had tried African cuisine before so it was good that they could try some new and tasty foods.  African foods have many health benefits.  The diet is high in fibre, low in fat and sodium and uses wholesome cooking methods.

Yr 12 Food Studies

The combination of trying, testing and tasting Australia's rich cultural foods is a focus of Academy Food Studies.  But at VCE level we explore the 'food science' behind the preparation of dishes.

JUSTICE GROUP

Senior students have been volunteering at St Mary’s House of Welcome on a Tuesday morning, helping to prepare pancake morning teas and assisting in the kitchen. Our Year 12 student leaders have also been helping with weekly rosters.

Many families have been sending items to donate to St Mary’s House of Welcome for the clients they work with.  Items such as new toothbrushes, toothpaste, moisturizing creams, socks and jocks have been much appreciated.  Thank you to all the students in Years 7-12 and staff who have brought items. Please keep these coming.

BIG SISTER LITTLE SISTER PICNIC

On Thursday during extended homeroom time last week, the Year 12 students and their Year 7 Little Sisters went over the road to Carlton Gardens for a picnic. The weather conditions were amazing, with blue skies making an appearance for a perfect picnic. It was so much fun to catch up with our Little Sisters and see how they are going in Year 7 as well as meet other Year 7 buddies. Some Uno and card games were played, while others just had a chat and had some snacks to eat. Overall, it was lovely to see our buddies, whilst having a break from classes.

Thank you to Ms Muller and Ms Bongetti for organising this picnic and all teachers who came along.
