YR 7 & 8 HOMEWORK CLUB

This term we are commencing an exciting new initiative here at Academy; Year 7 & 8 Homework Club.

Homework Club will run in the McAuley Resource Centre (MRC) every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, commencing on 16 March 2022.

This Club will give students the opportunity to:

  • Complete homework, knowing there is assistance available from staff;
  • Work with other students in their year level;
  • Seek assistance with organization and study strategies

Homework Club will be supervised by members of the McAuley Resource Centre (MRC), our Learning Enhancement team, and volunteering teachers.  As these sessions are voluntary, students will be required to sign in and out of the MRC, on the days they choose to attend.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY: YR 8

This week in Year 8 Home Economics we looked at African cuisine. The students researched ingredients used in African cooking and we prepared an African dish.  Not many of the students had tried African cuisine before so it was good that they could try some new and tasty foods.  African foods have many health benefits.  The diet is high in fibre, low in fat and sodium and uses wholesome cooking methods.  It includes a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals.  If you would like to try the recipe it is listed below.  Happy cooking.

African Recipe - Carrot cakes with harissa yoghurt

Chickpeas bring nuttiness (and protein) to these sweet, spicy little carrot cakes.  Serve them with harissa yoghurt and watercress or a crunchy green salad.  Top of Form

Bottom of Form

Serves 2

Ingredients:

2 ½ carrots (300gm), sliced

200gm chick peas

1/8 c chopped coriander

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

½ egg, lightly beaten

2 tsp harissa paste

75gm low-fat Greek yoghurt

2 tsp olive oil

100gm bunch watercress sprigs picked

Method:

  1. Cook carrots in a pan of simmering water for 20 minutes or until just tender. Drain, return briefly to the heat to dry off any excess liquid.  Then add the chickpeas and roughly mash.
  2. Transfer to a bowl, cool slightly, then mix with coriander, cumin, ground coriander and egg.  Season. Use your hands to form into 4 balls.
  3. Chill for at least 30 minutes to firm up.  Swirl the harissa through the yoghurt and set aside until ready to serve.
  4. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frypan over medium heat. Flatten the balls into patties and cook for 2 – 3 minutes each side until golden and hot.
  5. Serve with watercress and harissa yoghurt.

Delicious!

Due to a mix up in the previous newsletter, we have republished this article with the correct photo and added the Year 8 Heroes article that was overlooked.  Apologies!

NETBALL

Some excellent work by Year 8 students, Estelle Postiglioni and Kylah Ginnane, who have taken it upon themselves to run a Year 7 Netball competition at lunch time. The purpose of this was to help the Year 7 students settle into the College.  The turn-out was very encouraging with one girl heard saying, “this is very encouraging,” and another saying “ this is so much fun.”

A great initiative where the Year 8s are taking it upon themselves to show some genuine leadership in the College.  “Well done girls,” one teacher was heard to say and “what a great initiative,” quipped another member of staff.

YR 8 HEROES

Congratulations to Emma Ibrahim and Elouise Robinson from Year 8 for a couple of outstanding sporting performances.

Emma is a highly talented tennis player who crossed the Yarra and claimed the tennis championship at the Boroondara Tennis Centre.  This was a prestigious prize that then set her up for the championships at Geelong the following weekend - which she also won!  Great effort Emma.

Eloise Robinson managed to win the most individual points at the Swimming Carnival recently.  Evidently, an outstanding swimmer who is willing to participate in all she can, she also excels in community service through her membership of the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club.  They sure will be safe down at Anglesea in the surf when Elouise is there and I am sure they were quaking in the tennis shoes down at Geelong waiting for Emma to arrive.
