From the Principal

Benvenuto - Welcome
Our Lenten period began last week with two lovely celebrations, one in the School of Wonder and one for the School of Innovation and School of Possibilities. It was great to have St Mel's Parish Priest Fr Peter Taylor with us to celebrate with the older children in the afternoon liturgy. For coverage of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday celebrations please see the Catholic Identity page in this edition of il giornale. We are now in the throes of planning the opening college Mass which had to be rescheduled due to COVID restrictions. We are now able to go ahead with Mass at St Mel's Christ the King Church in Hamilton St, Shepparton, on Thursday, March 24 at 9:45am.
We are very pleased to say that other events have also been able to be rescheduled, with our Twilight Swimming Carnival now going ahead next week on March 16. Further details can be found on the Sports News page of this edition. The Year 3 children are off to Melbourne Museum and the Year 7 camp planning is back in full swing. Staff are working very hard to ensure our students can access some of the great experiences they have been missing over the last couple of years.
St Anne’s College is engaging in a Promoting Teacher Mental Health Project this semester. We are part of the wave 4 intake of schools participating in the program where we learn about psychological safety in the workplace. In our first session we were shown statistics from Workcover that demonstrated a steep rise in psychological injury claims in education, outstripping the physical injury claims. As part of the project, we will develop an action plan to ensure we have processes and procedures in place to try to reduce this statistic occurring at St Anne’s College. As part of this project, our professional learning day today included learning opportunities for staff in mental health and wellbeing as well as engaging in some mental health and wellbeing activities.
It has been an exciting time at St Anne’s College, with our next stage build progressing nicely. The east section of the build has seen the external framing completed and the builders now focusing on the internal structures. The crane has been in full swing this week, with the whistle blowing non-stop throughout the day as they expertly craned the huge steel frames into position.
March 8 was International Women's Day. Children in the School of Wonder celebrated La festa della donna with a focus on creating something special for a significant woman in their lives during their Italian classes. The college paid tribute to all of the amazing, inspirational, strong and supportive women in our community with a video posted on the St Anne's College Facebook page: https://fb.watch/bGRqsBPf4_/
We continue to keep the Ukrainian people and all people suffering from conflict across the world in our prayers and hope for a peaceful resolution soon. As we continue our Lenten journey, we also pray for the work of Caritas Australia and for the communities who are experiencing hardship:
We pray for all those whose access to food and water is insecure. May the whole human family respond generously in creating lasting justice in the distribution of life’s necessities. May we respond to opportunities such as those presented by Project Compassion this Lent to build for all future generations.
Amen.
