PDHPE

Welcome to PDHPE for Term 2 at Mater Dei 2022. Staff have been very productive preparing learning across all PDHPE courses to provide great opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

At the beginning of all new terms, it is important for both students and parents to check the Prac/Theory lesson timetable to ensure that they are fully prepared to engage and participate in each and every lesson.

Year 7 PDHPE

Year 7 has begun this Term looking at celebrating diversity. Students will develop personal skills about living in a multicultural society that promotes inclusion and supports diversity. They will recognise and challenge stereotypes and discrimination. Part of this unit will also include learning about different cultures in relation to health, including health and the connection to country of ATSI Peoples. Students explore the importance of concepts such as Kinship and Connection to Country for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups within Australia.

Year 8 PDHPE

During Term 2, Year 8 students will investigate issues related to managing the safety of themselves and others. Discussions and strategies surrounding consent, online safety and road safety are all important areas for young people to explore at this stage of their life. We highly encourage parents and families to continue these discussions at home to build upon their knowledge and understanding.

Year 10 PDHPE

Year 10 are currently working through a unit titled Risky Business. Students will primarily focus on risk taking and decision making around the use of alcohol and both prescribed and illicit drugs.

A particular focus in this unit will investigate the use of e-cigarettes or “Vapes”. As this is still a relatively unknown risk to health, we will investigate current research and evidence as to the short and long term health risks and the potential consequences for illegal under age use.

Students will learn to make informed choices and develop assertive decision making skills that will enable them to deal with the challenges faced by adolescents.
