GROK - WEB.COMP MAY 2022

The last week of notes and questions is ready to go! Answers to all problems are due by 9pm AEST this Sunday!

If you enjoyed Web.Comp and want to test out your new skills, Web.Comp Tournament starts next week! Some students have been working hard to complete each week.

The final date to submit the problems is 9pm AEST Sunday 5 June.

Sunday 12 June is the final date to submit your entry for the tournament.

The “Tournament” is a week-long competition where students can design their own web pages and submit their creations to compete against other students' designs. They can also vote for their favourites. The Tournament begins on Monday 6 June.

If you are participating but finding that you are lacking in motivation or time to complete it, come to A4 on Wednesday lunchtimes and we can “Grok” together. If you’re not at the main campus, feel free to email me: hmn@mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au and I’ll make sure we succeed together.

Or if you feel that you just don’t have the time to complete the tasks, please email me so we can work it out together.

10ICT AIRTABLE

This semester the students in 10ICT have been developing skills in the use of an online, free database software called Airtable.

Limiting ourselves to the free version of the software still gave the students the experience of working with tables of Records and Fields, choosing appropriate data types, sending forms to collect and automatically record data, manipulating displays of the data in various ways as appropriate and linking tables (the major advantage of using a database over a flat file) to reduce data redundancy.

Students created their own databases on Hollywood Actors, their ICT class and current exam timetables as well as using and manipulating some pre-prepared databases on Seasonal Produce in Australia, and Famous People’s Favourite Books.

One of the greatest benefits, of course, was that, along with our use of Stile to present content, activities and assessments, this work could be completed on the Chromebooks at home. With a high level of student absence – both predictable such as camps, excursions, sport and unpredictable such as medical issues – this meant they could continue to work from home and even, at times, complete assessment tasks at home while in a Google Meet.

Hopefully the students learned to appreciate the advantages of maintaining certain data in a database rather than just a spreadsheet file and should help to prepare them for using other databases such Microsoft Access if they choose to study an IT offering at VCE.
