St Mary’s Parish Prayer

God our Father, as we thank you for the blessings, we ask you to bless this Parish of yours, so that

we may love you more.

Encircle our families with your loving care.

Help parents to be good examples to their

children and our youth to grow in strength as good Christians.

To the sick grant health, to the aged bring serenity and to those in sorrow, joy.

May we grow stronger in faith and may

our love for one another become deeper

in our daily living.

We make this through the intercession of our Mother Mary.  Amen

NEW - On the Lighter Side

A taxpayer received a strongly worded "second notice" that his taxes were overdue. Hastening to the tax office, he paid his bill, saying apologetically that he had overlooked the first notice. "Oh!" confided the collector with a smile, "we don't send out first notices anymore. We have found that second notices are far more effective.”

Updated - Prayer of The Week

O God, who alone can probe the depths of the heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner. As we stand before you, grant us the gift of humility, that we may see our own sins clearly and refrain from judging our neighbour. (Opening Prayer 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C 1998 ICEL Missal)

Updated - Looking at the Readings

The Gospel according to Luke starts with Zechariah at prayer and ends with the Apostles in the Temple praising God. There are many accounts of Jesus at prayer in Luke’s Gospel and this week and last week we read two parables about prayer: to pray continually or persistently and today to pray simply, humbly and honestly.

The Liturgy of the Word begins with a reading from the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament: Sirach (Ecclesiasticus), which provide the reader with a collection of teachings and images of God. Thus we see God as a judge, a listener, a carer for the poor and a ready responder to his people’s petitions. The reading serves as an apt introduction to the Responsorial Psalm (The Lord hears the cry of the poor.) and the to Gospel parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.

The Parable contains certain subtleties. Firstly it is a comparison of the two, not a condemnation of one, for the Pharisee is rightly giving thanks to God. Secondly both acknowledge themselves before God, one as a do gooder the other as a sinner. One is turned towards himself while the other, after self-acknowledgment, turns towards God for mercy. The tax collector’s prayer has entered our liturgy as an alternate Act of Contrition in the first form and as a response in the Penitential Litany in the second form of the sacrament of reconciliation.

You are invited to add your name to the list in the Narthex.  The process will be quite flexible, decisions can be made in the groups. Each group may choose from the six topics and choose two or three for your prayer and discernment.

Our Parish at St Mary's

  • Do you love coming along to mass each week?
  • Would you like to see our church continue to be a prayerful place for you and your family to come together each week?
  • Do you enjoy special events like anniversary masses, baptisms, weddings?
  • Have you noticed our every changing  altar displays?
  • Do you enjoy our overhead Caritas stories during Lent?
  • Are you happy to be part of our wonderful Christmas celebration in the Marian Centre?

If you answer YES to any of these questions, then we would love to hear from you.

Our Liturgy Team, headed up by Mavis Murphy and Liz Donnelly are appealing to you, our valued parishioners, to step up and    volunteer your services to assist in some of these areas.

We know you all have special skills and gifts in different areas and we would like you to share them with us.

  •  Some people have wonderful skills for Proclaiming the Word of the Lord and therefore reading at mass would be their   contribution.
  • Others have a special calling to be part of our mass by offering themselves as a Special Minister.
  • Some of you have the beautiful gift of music and could volunteer and help out our Music Ministry team.
  • You may be very good at handling money and would be a great asset joining our Bingo Team or perhaps assisting our Counters after mass occasionally.

Next weekend we will have speakers at both masses. They will expand on the various ministries and we will distribute a form for you all to fill out and return to Mons Peter or the Parish Office.

Thank you so much for caring for St. Mary’s.
