Reading Buddies

4/5P read the book ‘The Bad Seed’ by Jory Johns. We discussed why the sunflower seed felt he was ‘bad’ and what made him turn his life around in the end. After much rich discussion, we got excited about writing our own stories about a food with a problem to solve. There were so many funny names! Goodbye Garlic, Crazy Cookie, Awesome Avocado and so many more! We decided that our audience would be our buddies in K/1 Red. So, we started out by brainstorming ideas together (remembering to keep our vocabulary at a level that was easy to understand for our buddies). Then, we created comic strips with pencil and paper to create a first draft. We read these stories to each other to see if they made sense and were funny. They were! Our next step was to use our technological skills in the computer lab and bring our cartoon’s first draft into a final draft. Once our cartoons were printed out and looking very professional, we cut them out in order and glued them into small books. We made title pages and even added our first draft pages to show our buddies the full writing journey. Our last step was to read our stories to our K/1 Red buddies. Success! They loved them so much! It was such an awesome feeling to share our stories with our buddies. They enjoyed it so much, we read other books to them too.
