Celebrating Students
For the most part, my elementary school experience from 1st-5th grade is not very memorable but I do remember PK and K where we did a lot of fun activities and silly celebrations such as; wearing a crown on our birthdays, getting a certificate for learning something new, or bringing in a toy to share with the class. These small rituals can truly change a student’s experience at school from one that is mundane to an exciting one!
It is very important that we celebrate our students as much as we can. These celebrations don’t have to be always elaborate or costly. They can be simply a high five, a word of praise, or even a silent cheer. A small celebration can help motivate our students and help them feel a sense of pride in their work, their efforts and accomplishments. Something to think about too is that we don’t always have to celebrate the ‘right answer’, it could be for putting in effort and trying one’s best.
