Junior Mayor Elections 2022

On Thursday 26 of May, we had the privilege of representing OLA at the Junior Mayor Election for 2022. Junior Mayor is a competition where schools in The City of Kingston write a speech on a topic chosen by the council members. This year the topic was; ‘If you had a time machine and you could travel 5 years into the future what would you hope your community would look like?’

Once to twice a week we got together to prepare the speech and props on that topic. Some things we spoke about were: zero carbon emissions, electric cars, community gardens, greenery, recycling and people of all ages connecting. It was a very fun and exciting process creating the speech together and we had a great time.

After all the preparation, we finally reached the day where we got to present and vote. All of us had a great time and we met Councillor Georgina Oxley, who used to go to OLA and the Mayor, Steve Staikos. It was really fun watching the other schools present and after they did, it was time to vote. We were given a red piece of paper with a list of all the speakers and we had to number the best three in preference order but we couldn’t vote ourselves. Then we were given a blue piece of paper with the names of all the schools in the Ward groups (different areas) and we had to number our favourite speeches in each Ward from one, first personal favourite, and second, for our second favourite.

In conclusion we had a fantastic day and it was a great experience. Our speaker Neve was successfully selected as one of the roles on the Junior Mayor Council. This is Neve, Darcey, Ollie and Will signing off as Junior Mayor Councillors.

iSea iCare

The Prep students loved their workshop with our Sustainability Leaders. The Sustainability Leaders are iSea iCare Ambassadors for The Great Southern Reef and enjoyed running a workshop with the younger students. The Preps learnt about rubbish in the ocean and how to look after our marine life and keep our waterways clean.

 GATEWAYS IGNITE

G.A.T.E.WAYS Ignite program provided selected students the opportunity to participate in two half-day workshops led by specialist educators hosted at your school. Students explored scientific and mathematical concepts outside of the curriculum in exciting, hands-on workshops designed to ignite curiosity, challenge and inspire budding young scientists and mathematicians!

Parent feedback

I just wanted to let you know how much my child enjoyed the day today with Gateway.  He was especially excited to tell me all about genetics and the activities they did.

Thank you for providing opportunities like this for the students and I hope they all enjoyed it as much as my child did.
