Science News
During this month, the Science learning area has been busy doing a range of activities. The Year 7 students have been completing their research practical, which is the Separation Challenge. Ms Kai Kurashige organised a STEAM based activity with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) who run workshops which address real life contexts. Year 7 students did the program: Clean water – learn how to use various rocks to make a basic water filter. They thoroughly enjoyed this activity. Glen Eira College would like to say a big thank you to Ms Kai Kurashige for organising this event.
In our Year 8 SEAL Science class, students have been studying Electromagnetism. One of the challenge activities they undertook was to create an electromagnet using copper wire, a paperclip and a magnet. During this activity, they learnt STEAM design principles where they had to make regular adjustments to improve their design so that the electromagnet was able to rotate and produce an electric current.
In Year 9 Science, students have been studying the Nervous and Endocrine systems and their roles in the human body. As part of the program, Mr Lake’s class undertook a dissection activity on the human eye. Students were doing a wonderful job being able to identify different aspects of the eye structures.
As we end Semester 1 the Science faculty staff would like to wish all students and parents a wonderful holiday break and we look forward to seeing you all next term.
