Mathematics @ GEC

Mathematics @ GEC

This being the last newsletter of the term, I would like to congratulate all students for their amazing learning journey so far in Maths this year.  Students have been spending time in class on understanding concepts, getting fluent with them and also being able to apply their skills gained in solving problems and reasoning out mathematically.

8E, Mr Owen’s class, worked collaboratively this week in small groups to create their doughnut percentages by demonstrating their team work skills such as helping others to complete their task.  This was a task set purposefully to highlight the need for communicating with each other when working in groups and the following was a feedback from a student upon completing the task:

“Communicating, you might forget how useful and helpful it is to be able to communicate with your team until you do a task like this."

Developed by Playlunch Games with The Mathematical Association of Victoria, Town Squared is a game that immerses children in a beautiful multiplayer world that weaves maths concepts and financial literacy learning into gameplay. Children play interesting scenarios in a collaborative and encouraging environment with their friends, applying the maths they learn in the classroom as they go.

The game also provides families with access to the Family Portal, with resources including articles by MAV that explain maths concepts, and home activities to encourage children’s interests and maths skills.

Help change a conversation about maths from one of avoidance and fear, to one of curiosity and skill-building.

Town Squared is a safe environment for children and families:

  • kidSAFE certified
  • No advertising to children
  • No cyber-bullying
  • Designed with screen time in mind
  • Your data is safe and secure

Currently available for iPhone and iPad, with Android and PC versions coming soon.
